The Journalist's Resource informs the news by empowering reporters and editors to use evidence-based academic research throughout every step of the reporting and editing process. We bridge the gap between academia and journalism.
Evidence-based studies can help resource-constrained journalists get grounded in a new topic before setting out to pursue a story, shed light on research-based solutions to societal problems, and hold policymakers accountable for their claims.
The problem is that many members of the media don’t know how to identify high-quality research or use it in their reporting, don’t understand academic jargon or research methods, don’t have time to navigate lengthy journal articles, and don’t realize what they don’t know about research — which can lead to reporting errors and erode trust in news.
The Journalist's Resource team comprises a small group of seasoned journalists who understand the need to inform the news with evidence-based research. Through our website and weekly newsletter, we offer research explainers and tip sheets on topics including education, public health, immigration, criminal justice, climate change, economics, and local elections. In addition, we offer tip sheets and explainers to help journalists understand academic research methods, find and recognize high-quality research, and avoid missteps when reporting on new studies and public opinion polls.
Our team also hosts research literacy training sessions and topical webinars. Now well into our second decade, we serve a large global audience of journalists, creators, educators, librarians, policymakers and news consumers.
Our website features thousands of free practical explainers and tip sheets to help journalists inform their stories with evidence-based research and introduce them to top scholars in their fields.
