The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) is the leading pro bono legal services organization for journalists and newsrooms in the U.S.
Newsrooms and independent journalists frequently lack access to legal counsel when pursuing stories or seeking to access public records. With shrinking newsroom budgets, the availability of pro bono legal representation is critical for journalism — to secure access to public records and meetings, vet stories before they are published, and defend newsgathering rights at the local, state, and federal levels. Since 1970, the Reporters Committee has provided free legal services for journalists nationwide. Through our national litigation program, trainings and legal guides, amicus work, and local legal services — the Local Legal Initiative and ProJourn — we ensure that journalists and newsrooms have access to legal resources to report on the news and keep their communities informed.
Our attorneys will litigate on behalf of newsrooms and independent journalists for access to public records, meetings, or other newsgathering needs.
