We partner with communities to develop the locally driven news and information solutions they need to thrive.
The decline of local news is posing serious challenges to American democracy, giving way to misinformation, mistrust and decreased civic engagement. At the same time, legacy media organizations have historically underrepresented their communities, often excluding marginalized perspectives from news coverage.
The Listening Post Collective addresses these challenges by providing financial backing, peer learning, and networking opportunities to grassroots information providers across the U.S. Our open-source tools and resources allow communities to identify their own information needs and develop responsive media solutions, helping them develop a blueprint for ongoing community engagement and readying them for support from larger JSOs and funders. We recognize journalism as a part of broader civic health efforts, shifting the conversation about the need for independent news from an abstract plea to ‘save journalism’ to concrete examples of how journalism can support and benefit people and communities — and how equitable information access can impact people’s lives for the better.
A step-by-step guide and resource hub for co-creating locally rooted media solutions that helps community actors identify information needs, design responses, and strengthen the role of civic media from the ground up.
